Step drills are one of the most useful tools you can add to your toolbox, whether you are a homeowner or a professional. With the quality step drills manufactured at Sawblade.com.au, you can not only drill holes easily but also widen them as per your requirements.

It has a total of nine various sizes, with each of the steps correspond to a different measurement. Step drills can create a hole in any type of material with ease. However, it’s when you want to widen an existing hole where step drills shine.

Step Drills: Designed To Perfection For Stellar Performance

If you want to drill smooth holes on metal, you can rely on step drills to provide faster and smoother holes. They work well on thin material and also possess the toughness for thicker materials. The bits are made from high-speed cobalt steel and have a titanium coating that ensures outstanding sharpness and durability.

These bits can drill sheet metals like a hot knife on butter. The holes are smooth and round, and thanks to the two-fluted design, you will get faster cuts every time. Compared to conventional bits, they are nearly impossible to snap.

However, you must keep in mind that step drills are not compatible with hammer drills. Also, you should not set the drilling speed too high or else it will damage the cutting edge.

Tips For Using The Step Drill

For the most widely used application for the step drills, making existing holes wider, here are a few steps to follow:

  • First, clamp the washer in the vice.
  • Insert your step bit to your drilling machine
  • Measure the hole size.
  • Mark the depth on your drill bit using a permanent marker.
  • Start the machine and widen the hole to the corresponding size.

2. Great job, now select the Width (mm)

3. Select the Length (mm) (Round up to the Closest Increment)(Round up to the Closest Increment)

3. Now Enter the Exact Length in (mm) (Made to your Order)

Length is not correct, changed to maximum allow length.

4. Select the TPI (Teeth Per Inch)

The number of teeth per inch (TPI) defines the pitch of the blade and can vary from 1 to 32 tpi.

On some blades there are different pitches on the same blade. You must select the correct tpi for the thickness of material you are cutting. If the corrrect tpi is not chosen the blade life will be dramatically shortened.

The general rule of thumb is: For wood and soft materials aim ffor 3-6 teeth in the work piece.
